Ceramic vs stainless steel vs plastic pet bowls: which is best?
The research is more mixed than most bowl guides admit. Here’s how each material compares, and what matters more than any of them.

For most pets, a well-made ceramic or stainless steel bowl is a better long-term choice than plastic. Stainless steel is the toughest, ceramic is the heaviest and hardest to tip, and plastic is cheap but scratches easily. The research doesn't crown a clear winner on hygiene, so how often you wash the bowl matters more than what it's made of.
How do the three materials compare?
| Ceramic | Stainless steel | Plastic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | Heavy, hard to tip | Light unless weighted | Very light |
| Durability | Can chip or crack if dropped | Very tough | Scratches and chews easily |
| Cleaning | Easy while the glaze is intact | Easy | Harder once scratched |
| Noise | Quiet | Can clink and ding | Quiet |
| Look | Most choice of colours and designs | Plain | Lots of colours |
| Best for | Pushy eaters, homes where looks matter | Travel, chewers, big dogs | Short-term or travel use |
Which material is the most hygienic?
The honest answer is that it isn't settled, because the studies point in different directions.
- A 2023 study of 96 dog food bowls in BMC Veterinary Research found metal bowls had higher bacterial counts than plastic ones. Wet food was linked to more contamination, and dishwashing beat hand washing.
- A small [Hartpury University study](https://pure.hartpury.ac.uk/en/publications/microbiological-assessment-of-canine-drinking-water-and-the-impac/) of water bowls compared all three materials over 14 days, and bacteria rose in every one of them.
- A 2022 study in [PLOS ONE](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8986020) found that following a proper washing routine reduced contamination.
Neither of the first two studies is big enough to pick a winner. The third shows what actually moves the needle: washing. Our guide on how often to wash pet bowls covers the routine.
Are ceramic bowls safe for dogs and cats?
Yes, when they're made for food use and kept in good condition. Check two things:
- The glaze. Ask the maker whether it's food-safe, particularly for handmade or imported pottery, since not all decorative ceramics are made to hold food.
- The condition. Retire any bowl with a chip or a crack. Sharp edges can hurt your pet, and cracks are hard to clean.
Are plastic bowls bad for dogs and cats?
Not automatically, but they're the first we'd replace. Scratches are hard to clean, and chewers can damage them quickly. Some cats also seem to dislike them: Cats Protection suggests trying ceramic if your cat avoids a plastic bowl, as the plastic may affect the taste of the water.
How do I choose the right bowl for my pet?
- Messy or pushy eaters: go heavy, with a wide base. Ceramic or a weighted steel bowl stays put, particularly on a non-slip mat.
- Dogs who chew everything: stainless steel, because there's little to chew.
- Cats: many prefer a wide, shallow dish. See our guide to whisker fatigue in cats.
- Travel: light stainless steel or a collapsible bowl.
- Noise-sensitive pets: ceramic avoids the ding of a metal bowl or a tag hitting the rim.

Frequently asked questions
Is ceramic or stainless steel better for dogs?
Both are good choices. Stainless steel is tougher and better for chewers and travel, while ceramic is heavier, quieter and harder to tip. Keep either one clean, and replace a ceramic bowl if it chips.
What is the safest bowl for a cat?
Any food-safe ceramic or stainless steel bowl that's kept clean. Many cats prefer one that's wide and shallow.
How often should I replace my pet's bowl?
Replace it when it's chipped, cracked or deeply scratched. Good ceramic and stainless steel bowls can last for years if they stay in good condition.
